'Peaceful and happy': conversations from the carnival
Celebrating community in St Denys
“It’s really nice to see so many people around, and support the area we actually live in, because I think it’s important with friendship and everyone getting on with each other. It’s a really good opportunity today to actually be together with everybody. To be peaceful and happy.”
So said one carnival-goer, in this 10-minute audio feature, as Anna Carr chatted to pirates of all ages on the sunny streets of St Denys in May 2026.
Another added:
“The best thing is, people you don’t talk to normally, or see or have anything to do with, they’re all out having fun and you’re talking to each other. That’s the best thing about it.”
Hear more about why people of all ages chose to take part. About fabulous floats, costumes and water guns, the significance of the river for the local area, and what the event “means”. We even hear why parades should pop up… well, anywhere.
